This is a great question and is one I asked myself when I first started.

I was once a newbie with an idea that I wanted to start an internet home business probably like you if you are reading this. Don’t get me wrong you can get free website and they are offered completely set up for you. So the question you may have right now is “Why go to all that trouble of building a website when I can get this professional one set up for me for free.”

Think about this for a minute, wouldn’t it be great if by the wave of a magic wand we could all get onto that road called the “lazy man/woman’s way to riches?” The thing that they don’t tell you is they are all affiliate websites.

Now can you imagine for one second if you had a 1000 websites basically looking the same you would all be competing against each other for page one in the search engines.  You would all be competing against each other for PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising. Now do you see where I am coming from?

You have to become original to become successful. This is something that I did not know when I first started out. You can still become an affiliate of a product but your web site has to become an original and not a cookie cutter of other websites.

I hope I have given you the reasons why you must get your own website.

The question now is how do I do this?

When you are ready to start you will need two things:

1)    A domain name.

2)    A hoisting company.

The newsletter that you signed up for is it personally written to you each week? 

Sorry the answer is: No

If we did it by hand it would take hours to sit down and write each person a letter. Imagine writing that letter to hundreds of people and personalising it with their name.  Forget it!

So we use a special program called an auto-responder.

Auto-responder and how they work

If a someone fills in a form on a website asking for a free newsletter or eBook and then presses the application button, the following process goes into action.

1) The email address and name are logged into the auto-responder.

2) The auto-responder looks for the first pre-written letter and sends that back to the persons email address personalized with your name. It will request that they should reply to this email proving that its your email address. This is called the opt-in letter.

3) When the person gets the email they are requested to click on the link in the email. This is proof that you are the right person and it’s your email address and does not belong to someone else. If the person puts in someone else’s address or does not click on the link nothing will happen and no further emails will be sent out.

4) Once the person has opt-in by clicking the link in the email,  the auto responder takes over and sends out emails or newsletters.

The affiliate marketer will have a number of emails set up to go out at various intervals. This could be once a week or once a day according to the offer. They will all be personalized with the name that was used in the website form.

It takes about 5 to 7 messages before a prospect will make a purchase. The internet marketer can have as many as 200 emails set up to go out one at a time at preset intervals. It does not matter when a person joins the mailing list the auto-responder will start at the first email and carry on to the last email.

You can see how valuable an auto-responder is to an internet marketer because they only have to write a series of newsletters once. They will be used over and over again every time a new person joins the mailing list.

An auto-responder will always have an opt-out link at the bottom of the page. This link will automatically remove you from the list and you will not receive any more emails.

This is to prevent SPAM and all legitimate internet marketers have this link. If the email has no opt-out link use caution it is probably SPAM.

So now you know!

You can feel confident that when you sign up for a newsletter from an affiliate marketer you will be able to stop the emails if they become a nuisance or they prove to be of no value to you.

Panic sets in and you turn to the internet. “I know!!!” you say “Lets type ‘make money online‘ into Google and see what we find.” Well if you do you will find at least 377,000,000, yes!!! you read it right, 377 million websites all claiming to help you ‘make money online.’ So now what can you do?

You will find that everyone has the best deal for making you money online. The problem is you done not have any and they all want some. I think the majority of people read the first paragraph on the page then scroll down to the bottom of the page to see how much all this blah… blah… blah… is going to cost them.

There are two ways to gain knowledge or information about anything.

1. You have to pay for it – Take a course, buy a book, watch a video, etc.
2. Get information for free – Free information from the internet, join a library.

The second way obviously takes much longer, but free information can be found.

One of the best ways to learn if you have little money is to join a few mailing lists that offer a free ebook or a weekly newsletter. This gives you the opportunity to get to know the website and the people running the site before you make any investment. If you get bombarded with lots of buy this or buy that rubbish you can always un register until you find someone who is helpful and not too sales pitchy. Get yourself a Gmail account for this, don’t use your favorite email account just incase you get a lot of SPAM.

Here are a few things you will have to learn to start making money online.

1.) You will need a website or a Blog.
This is the foundation for you to put your webpage out there in hyperspace to be able to sell something or collect customers for your mailing list.

You can get free blogs but they are not as effective as getting a hosting service, but are a great way to get started. Free is always good to practice.

2.) If you are collecting customers you will need an autoresponder.
You will understand more about this when you join a mailing list. It is the autoresponder that sends you that weekly news letter or the sales pitch.

3.) You will need a product to sell.
Take a look at ‘Clickbank‘ browse through the many items to see if any suits your personality or you feel good about selling it. Join ‘Clickbank‘ it’s free, and the commission is around 75% so that is not a bad return.

Take note… Most people when they start out with their Internet Home Business start to sell right away. No one likes to be hard sold to, think about it do you? This is the reason most people fail miserably at Affiliate Marketing.

You have to let people now a little bit about YOU first, because people will only buy from people they know or trust.

This is where step number 2 is important and the least done by a newbie. This is the step where your customers get to know a little about you, before you sell them anything.

This has just been a basic outline of what you need to know to start your own internet home business. Like any thing new it can be learned and once you have acquired this new skill as an Affiliate Marketer or Internet Marketer it is yours to keep for life.

What ever you do, please do not get hooked on the get rich quick schemes, they will take your money quicker than a roulette table.

One of the first things you will do as an Internet Marketer or Affiliate Marketer is find a product and create a web site.

The content of the web page should be associated with one major and a couple of minor key words. The reason for this is you will link back to your website using these keywords in your article or forum signature box (sometimes called signature file).

One of the many question a newbies (beginners) asks is “How can I get free traffic to my web page?”

If you started a regular bricks and mortar business, say, selling shoes, you would need traffic into your store to generate customers.With that in mind you have to do the same with your hyper real estate. To get lots of traffic you would have to spend lots of money in advertising such as Pay per click.

The problem with that is you probably don’t have tons of cash to spend on expensive advertising. So how can you advertise for free?

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Article writing
If you have read this far then this article has been successful in catching your attention. If I capture your attention long enough you will find my signature box at the bottom of this article. This is where you place your keyword link and web page address. If you like the article you would click the link to find out more information

Article writing is one of the best free advertising you can do for your internet home business. Other people can use this article for their blog as long as they keep the signature box and links intact.

2. Forums
You will find that forums are another easy way to get free advertising. Join about four or five forums in your niche. That is a forums that discuses topics similar to what your web page is about.

Some will let you put your signature at the bottom of your post right away, others will only allow a signature after 30 posts to protect them selves from SPAM, The signature file is where you would put your links back to your web page. Some forums will also allow you to put a banner in your signature file.

3. Blogs
Find blogs within your niche where you can leave a comment about the topic you just read. In the comment section of the blog at the bottom of the page you will find a place for you to put your web site address and leave a comment.

Of course there are other ways of free advertising like adding your website to directories or free classified ads, but the above three are my favorites and will be enough to keep you busy generating free traffic for your internet home business.

Don’t forget to put your web site in your email signature file, so that every time you send an email out, you will be getting the benefit of free advertising.

Most people avoid banner ads like the plague, they know they are going to be sold something.  Knowing this you have to generate curiosity in your ad.

Here are a few things to think about when creating your banner ad’s

1. Think about reverse psychology. For example if you see a fence with the words “Wet Paint” the curios would touch it. I saw an ad on a forum that just said “Warning don’t click here” I think it was very successful because it got my curiosity. You could say things like “Don’t click here if…. blah-blah-blah, well you get the idea.

2. You could use vibrant words in your banner ad’s like sizzling, ultimate, scorching deals. In internet marketing you sell the sizzle not the steak.

3. You can use words like 50% off, buy one get one free, discount, etc. Just the word FREE gets a lot of attention even though I think its way over used.

4. Some form of security helps like ‘Guaranteed satisfaction or your money back.’ This removes fear and provides more confidence in your merchandise or service.

5. A beginner on the internet may not know that the banner ad can be clicked so using those well-known words “click here” will improve your click through rate.

6. You could advertise a trail offer, free sample, or even a large mark down for a short period of time so they can try before they essentially pay full price.

7. To get a better click through rate focus on the benefits rather than the features. Things like how it will transform your life, give you a whiter smile or loose weight while eating any thing you want. We have all seen these examples on the front page of magazine displayed at the checkout counter in your local grocery store.

You will start to critique banner ads. The next time you see a banner ad examine it, see if it has one or more of the above suggestions. Think does it get my curiosity or is it trying to hard sell me something.

Nobody likes high pressure sales.

You have started an Internet Home Business and you are able to generate lots of traffic. The only problem is “No one is buying any thing!!!”

Lets take a look at this checklist and see if we can find out why.

1. Do You make people feel safe?
If selling a product – Is it from a secure server indicated by https://
If collecting email addresses – Do you tell them all the information will be kept confidential and you won’t sell or SPAM their address.

2. Does your website look professional?
Its best if you use your own domain name. It should be relevant to the product or service and not some affiliate link.

3. What does your webpage say?
Does your head line target your visitor.
In your content are you only talking about features instead of the benefits your product or service provides.

4. Did you get their email address before they left?
People don’t usually buy the first time they visit, so did you remind them to bookmark your site or offer something for free to capture their email address.

5. Do you have a “contact us” or “About Us” page on your website?
This will make people more comfortable and safe, when they know something about you. Do you list your email address or phone number so they can contact you.

6. Are you using buying keywords to attract your visitors?
90% of the people searching the web are looking for information only. The other 10% are looking to buy. This should be your target traffic.

7. How urgent is it to buy now?
Most people will put off buying your product or service till later. Once they leave your website they will forget about it. Entice them to buy now with a freebie or a discount with a timed deadline.

This is not a perfect checklist but its something to review and help turn that non profitable website in to a profitable Internet Home Business.

Here are some other things you can do

Compare your website with other websites selling a similar product or service. Never copy a website but you can check out the layout of each site and see which would best suite your needs.

Look at things like the type and size of font they use above the fold. Where is the form located to capture email addresses for your free offer, ezine or newsletter.

You can use several different landing pages and track which is producing the most sales.

If you are a person that can be self disciplined don’t mind working 12 and 16 hours when you have to get the ball rolling.- Then working from home is for you.

Once that ball starts to roll you can reap the rewards of your success.
